LinkedIn is a fascinating tool for the cleaning professional for several reasons. Firstly, it allows people to act as an ambassador for their company – no hiding behind Twitter or Instagram handles – you and your background are visible to all – although not all history is relevant to your current career path.
What this means is that anyone who is on Linkedin can be researched by potential clients and partners. This means not only your current role, but your educational background, your location and even your connections! Just how brave are you, to put everything on it?
So, using Linkedin effectively mean building up a network of people, both on a local scale and wider than your industry network. You can invite anyone to be your contact but there must be a mutual passion for something. It means building an accurate profile of your role within the business to gain connections. The better connections you have, the better influence you could have when sharing posts or writing your own articles.
It’s essentially Facebook for business – you can like, share and comment on other people’s posts. You can write your own posts or even articles (I wrote one on Big Data in the industry). Plus, a new feature is Linkedin video, using video to share your opinions.
I use Linkedin to be part of the various groups, share some interesting industry information and keep up to date with the industry. I have met two other cleaning companies this week and am surprised how diversely different we all are from one another as far as this topic is concerned. One person who was of the opinion that the company’s social media presence was someone else’s responsibility. So with that in mind I asked the other one, who didn’t see the point at all in any social media, so paid someone to retweet on Twitter or post likes on Facebook.
I wouldn’t say either of them were really embracing the positives of being on the pulse all the time. Clearly I am always adding new contacts from the wider cleaning industry which I’m loving being part of, as it’s great to see what other companies and countries are doing – a fascinating area!
Are you on Linkedin yet? If so, add me as a contact – Laura Napper!
